Blasts in Nigeria,Somalia kill over 35

Multiple blasts hit the Somalian capital Mogadishu and Nigeria’s main city of Kano within a span of 12 hours, killing at least 35 people and injuring hundreds of people

Multiple blasts hit the Somalian capital Mogadishu and Nigeria’s main city of Kano within a span of 12 hours, killing at least 35 people and injuring hundreds of people.

Five explosions at a bus park in Kano killed at least 25 on Monday in an area where Islamist sect Boko Haram is waging an insurgency against the government,a Reuters reporter who counted the bodies, said.

The blasts destroyed several buses in the Sabon Gari area of Kano,an area mostly inhabited by immigrants from Nigeria’s largely Christian south, the Reuters witness said. Military and police cordoned off the area after the blasts.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Boko Haram, which frequently has attacked the city,is a prime suspect.

“I ran for my dear life and managed to get out of the park after the second blast. Many people are lying dead,” said Ibrahim Bello.

In Mogadishu,a car bomb exploded near the presidential palace, killing at least 10 in a blast that appeared to target senior government officials, police said.

The suicide attacker detonated explosives while driving along a boulevard that runs between the palace and the national theatre,a route lined by tea-rooms that were engulfed in fire moments after the blast, senior police officer Abdiqadir Mohamud said. A public minibus driving along the road burst into flames.

“The suicide car bomber targeted a senior national security officer whose car was passing near the theatre,” Mohamud told Reuters. “Most of the people who died were on board the minibus – civilians. This public vehicle coincidentally came between the government car and the car bomb when it was hit. Littered in the scene are human hands and flesh.”
