Barreto’s twelve-year stint with Bagan comes to an end

Jose Ramirez Barreto announced that he will be ending his 12-year association with Mohun Bagan at the end of the season

Jose Ramirez Barreto,on Wednesday,announced that he will be ending his 12-year association with Mohun Bagan at the end of the season. The Brazilian striker,however,has no plans to hang his boots and is likely to sign up with newly-promoted Bhawanipore Club for the Super Division next season.”

“Time has come to leave the club. I thank the club for the wonderful love affair we had. I also thank the fans who remained with me all these years,” said Barreto,who debuted for Bagan in 1999. Barreto left the club in 2004 but returned in 2006 after a one-year stint in Malaysia as well with Mahindra United. He scored 200 goals for Bagan to become the only player in Indian football to achieve this feat with a club.”

“There had been moments of joy,pressure and sorrow. The first goal was special. The first League win was special. It has been a real pleasure to play so many seasons for my favourite “lub,” said Barreto,who won three national championships with the green and maroon brigade.

Farewell match

Bagan management,meanwhile,is hopeful that Barreto will be back with the club soon — this time as a coach and announced the Sunday I-League match against Pune FC as Barreto’s farewell game. “We will felicitate him,” Bagan secretary Anjan Mitra said.
