As the time approaches to draw up resolutions for the new year, there are a few things and people who are irrevocably off our wish list. Here’s a reminder of what took 2013 by storm:

It was the year that Miley Cyrus made “twerking” a household word. It got a major brand boost after Cyrus’s MTV performance and became one of the most Googled terms of 2013. But while twerking might be new to many,it’s actually been around since 1993.

It was also the year where reactions on social media required not having an opinion beyond love and pure hatred. Trolling reached new heights and Facebook saw an unprecedented number of ‘likes’.

It was the year a man who won the Nobel Peace Prize snapped a selfie with a beautiful, blonde world leader at the funeral of the Nobel Peace Prize winner whose life he eulogised.

It was the year that Beyonce lip-synched the national anthem at the Presidential inauguration and performance drug-taking cyclist Lance Armstrong came clean on Oprah.

It was the year former vice-president and climate change warrior Al Gore sold Al-Jazeera stake to Big Oil,netting $70 mn.

It was the year of unnecessary movie sequels – Smurfs 2 and Kick Ass 2.

It was also the year of lyric videos, with Arcade Fire’s one for Afterlife being the only one that deserves mention, not Justin Timberlake’s Suit & Tie and Katy Perry’s Roar.

It was the year where sexy dinosaur stories became a new trend in the world of adult fiction. Titles include Taken by the T-Rex and Running from the Raptor.

It was the year that saw Kanye West take his topless fiancé,Kim Kardashian, for a scenic motorcycle ride for his video Bound 2. It was brilliantly spoofed shot-by-shot by buddies James Franco and Seth Rogen (playing Kardashian).

It was the year Family Guy’s creator Seth MacFarlane got described as the worst Oscars host, attracting as much vitriol as Ricky Gervais did for his gig as Golden Globes host in 2010.
