The tsunami may have shattered the country’s southern coastline but it has made Chennai’s port the deepest on the east coast.
A ‘Bathymetry Survey’ conducted by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), to measure the depth of the sea has revealed the entry channel to the Chennai Port has deepened enabling the berthing of vessels of deeper drafts.
Sources at Chennai Port said the report has said 4-5 lakh cubic metre of sediment was dredged due to the high current generated by the tsunami.
This “miracle” — as termed by shipping experts — had deepened the 17.4 m-deep harbour by 1-2 m more, especially along Ambedkar dock and Barathi dock. Similarly, the depth of the entry channel which was 18.6 m has deepened by a metre.
