Congress today said there is no leader taller than Pranab Mukherjee as President of India at a time when the high Constitutional post may have to play a more proactive role in the era of coalition politics.

“Pranab da is known not only for his wise and sagacious ways but also as a fair and just man of wisdom who will fulfill his obligations under the Constitution without whim or favour,” an editorial in the latest issue of party mouthpiece ‘Congress Sandesh’ said.

The editorial said Mukherjee’s acceptance across the party lines has found him many supporters who are otherwise not a part of UPA.

“In this era of coalition politics, the President may have to play a more proactive role and there is no leader taller than him in this respect,” it said.

The ‘Congress Sandesh’ said the President has a very important responsibility as the protector of the Constitution and should be an individual who has the stature, experience and the knowledge to be able to exercise the powers vested in him.

“When Sonia Gandhi as the chairperson of the UPA decided to nominate Pranab Mukherjee for this coveted post, she surely had all this and more in her mind while making the selection,” it said.

The editorial said Gandhi has also displayed her political wisdom in renominating Hamid Ansari for the second time for the post of Vice-President. As chairman of the Upper House of Parliament,Ansari conducted the House in an exemplary manner and won appreciation of all,it added.
