NEW DELHI, May 20: Delhi Metro Phase One, which will cost Rs 5,371 crore and is expected to be fully operational by March 2005, covers 11 km of underground metro corridor between Delhi University and the Central Secretariat.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E. Sreedharan said today that considerable progress had been made in the form of land acquisition, rehabilitation of the project-affected people and planning of utility diversions.
The Managing Director said this at a meeting convened by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vijai Kapoor and attended by Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, Finance Minister Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Secretary P.V. Jayakrishnan and Principal Secretary (Transport) Raghunathan.
The implementation period of the metro rail project in the Capital has now been compressed from the earlier 10 years to seven years and the first section of the metro system is expected to be commissioned in less than four years.
The Lieutenant Governor assured the corporation that the Delhi government and other agencies would extend all help for the timely completion of the project.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has decided to give preference to the eight km of rail corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari. Work on this section is expected to commence immediately after the monsoons.
This includes a two-line railway bridge across the Yamuna, downstream of the ISBT Road bridge. This rail corridor would have six stations and around a million commuters are expected to use it every day after the completion of the project.
