In a major shift from its earlier stance, China has stated that key to resolution of crisis in Nepal lies in conciliation among the constitutional forces.

Visiting state councillor Tang Jiauxaun said “China is in favour of concillination among the constitutional forces” almost echoing international concern that the King must reach out to the political parties to restore democracy and peace in the country.

This marks a meaningful deviation from China’s earlier policy that the Royal takeover on February 1 was Nepal’s internal affairs. Tang , an influential Chinese leader who was earlier the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, separately met pro-democracy leaders inlcuding former Prime Ministers—G P Koirala and Shre Bahadur Deuba and communist party of Nepal—United Maxist Leninist leaders Vharat Mohan Adhikary and Amrit Bohra—who are part of the 7-party alliance for Democracy.

Tang who is here on the invitation of Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Kirtinidhi Bista was speaking at a luncheon reception hosted by China study centre.
