An APEX body of women’s forums in Assam today demanded the suspension of Nalbari district magistrate and superintendent of police after two girls were allegedly forced by the cops to take a ‘‘virginity test’’.
Police arrested the girls earlier this month allegedly on the basis of a rumour that they acted in a pornographic film, sent them for a ‘‘virginity test’’ and put them behind bars.
Unified Platform of Oppression Against Women president Sumitra Hazarika questioned the police action. Threatening to move the Guwahati High Court, she demanded the suspension of the magistrate and the SP.
The girls have already appealed to the Assam State Human Rights Commission and filed a criminal case of defamation against local newspapers, which allegedly spread the rumour.
