As many as 3,000 dual names have been removed from the electoral rolls in the East Khasi Hills district. Dual entries of names in the voters’ list were found to be high in Shella constituency with 600 dual names.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer B Dhar said: “We have deleted 3,000 names of people who have dual registration in the electoral rolls of East Khasi Hills and the EPIC cards were also taken away.”
The election department recently identified around 100 names that had dual entries in the electoral roll and issued orders for their cancellation. However, when the RO set October 25 as the deadline for cancellation of dual entries, the number increased to thousands from each constituency and the deadline had to be extended.
The department has warned that registering of name in the electoral list from two constituencies is a crime and those found guilty of having their names in two constituencies would be arrested and jailed. Government employees, who are found guilty of registering their names from two constituencies, would lose their job besides being jailed.
