Three days after “defensive” firing by the deputy commissioner that injured three students, situation in Churachandpur town remained tense but under control. The night curfew will remain in force till August 25.

On Friday, three high school students had received bullet injuries and several women were injured in action by the police and deputy commissioner A. Ibocha Singh when a crowd ransacked Churachandpur police station and entered the DC’s house.

The agitators had torched 14 vehicles including five of the police.

Churachandpur district has been seething since July 10 when the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) — a body of students from different tribes — launched an agitation demanding more government schools and relief for the victims of landmine blasts.

SC notice on Manipur blockade

NEW DELHI: With the economic blockade of Manipur by Naga students associations paralysing life in the state, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the state governments on a PIL seeking an early end to the hardships faced by the people of the state. The PIL filed by K.H. Jibon Singh alleging that the blockade had led to violation of the right to equality, life and free movement of the Manipuris.
