Editor-in-Chief of Marathi daily held on murder charges

A security supervisor was shot dead at the printing press where some employees were holding an agitation.

The Editor-in-Chief of Marathi daily Deshonnati,Prakash Pohare,was on Tuesday arrested in connection with the killing of an employee in the newspaper’s printing press at Gondkhairi near Nagpur,police said. A team of police from Nagpur arrested Pohare from Akola,said Manoj Sharma,SP Nagpur (rural).

On October 13,Rajendra Dupare (50),a security superviser,was shot dead at the printing press where some employees of the newspaper were holding an agitation.

Pohare along with a security guard,Ganesh D Fungud,had gone to the press when there was a scuffle with the agitating employees.

Pohare’s security guard had allegedly fired at Dupare from his rifle after a scuffle.

The newspaper,in its October 14 edition,published Pohare’s statement,in which he said that he was attacked when he arrived at the press,and the security guard had fired in defence.

Pohare,Fungud and two others,who were absconding,had been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.

Motherless infant taken off ventilator

Damini,the month-old baby battling for life at a hospital here,was taken off ventilator support on Tuesday after she showed signs of improvement,doctors said.

“Her condition is improving gradually so she was removed from ventilator today,” said Pratim Tamboli,director,Fortis Hospital,Jaipur.

The anaemic baby,whose rickshaw-puller father had been carrying her in a cloth sling around his neck since her mother’s death on September 20 as there was no one else to take care of her,was shifted to the hospital in a critical condition on Sunday. This happened after the state government decided to bear the medical expenses following extensive media coverage.
