Little security in place, is Chandigarh the next target?

As the nation is on a virtual alert post the recent serial blasts in Delhi, authorities in Chandigarh are doing little to suggest of any pre-emptive measures. The railway station, bus stands and airport in the city look as penetrable as ever with little sense of security.

At the airport, the checking procedure only consists of frisking done at the entry point of the main terminal and that also just to ensure that the passenger is carrying an air ticket. There is no extra checking or scanning of the luggage at the airport. When asked about the security situation after the blasts, Airport Director Sunil Dutt said, “We are on alert,”— where and how only the authorities know.

The situation at the railway station and ISBT-Sector 17 and 43 is worse. Neither is any security staff deputed at these places nor is there a check on abandoned luggage. “Seeing the attitude of the authorities leaves us shocked. There is no checking at the entry point of the railway station. The only checking is done in the train and that too only in Shatabdi, which is more of a casual routine,” said a passenger at the railway station.

Passengers at the ISBT-17 and 43 shared similar views. “Seeing the lax attitude of the authorities, it seems nothing has happened. We were expecting at least a couple of security men on patrol at the bus stand,” said an elderly couple waiting for a bus at ISBT, Sector 17.

Another commuter added that even the Volvo considered to be one of the safest conveyances, lacks proper checking of luggage. It is a safety concern for the public that needs to be addressed immediately.”

BJP seeks more security
The Chandigarh unit of BJP has urged the Union Home Ministry to take immediate steps for ensuring safety and security of residents in view of the terror threats and serial blasts. In a statement issued on Monday, president of the Chandigarh unit Kamla Sharma and former MP Satya Pal Jain stressed that despite numerous warnings of terror attacks in Delhi, the Centre did not take adequate steps in time.

“The government should not repeat the mistake and act in time to prevent such mishaps in future,” she said. The leaders added that crime in the city is escalating. There has been an increase in the number of thefts, snatchings and murder cases. A delegation of BJP will meet the UT Administrator on Tuesday and submit a memorandum listing their concerns.
