NEW DELHI, JUNE 15: In a message suffuse with firmness and resolve, Chief of Army Staff, Gen V P Malik has told all officers and jawans, “We have a very clear and precise task and that is to get our territory vacated and liquidate the intrusion”. And he has simultaneously also sent notes of appreciation to an officer and two battalions who have recently been involved in some of the most crucial operations in the Kargil sector.
The officer who has received a very rare personal message from the Army Chief is Major Sonam Wangchuk serving with the Indus Wing of Ladakh Scouts. Major Wangchuk led his team on an extremely difficult operation in the Chorbat La area, occupying a peak thus effectively cutting off any chance of the Pakistan Army making gains. Despite negligible supply lines, Maj Wangchuk and his Ladakh Scouts team continue to hold the position.
In his message of compliments to Maj Wanghchuk, Gen Malik has said “I am very impressed with your outstanding bravery and dedication. Well done. Wish you success in future endeavours”.
The two battalions who have received messages of congratulations for conduct of operations from Gen Malik are 18 Grenadiers and 2 Rajputana Rifles. The congratulatory messages are for evicting the Pakistan Army from its occupied positions in the area of Tololing during the prolonged three day assault from June 11 to 13. The largest recovery of Pakistani Army dead, wounded, arms and ammunition has been from this area. Messages to both battalions say “My heartiest congratulations for an extremely gallant action in clearing the enemy from area Hump/Pt 4590/Saddle. I wish the battalion all the success in future endeavours”.
The message to all ranks of the Army is, however, devoid of pleasantries and is firmly to the point. Gen Malik has declared emphatically that the “Enemy has violated the Line of Control in 3 Infantry Division Sector in area Batalik to Drass and made some intrusions into our territory with strategic and political aims. In the last few days, our troops have managed to stall the enemy’s operations thus denying him the fulfillment of his mission. We have succeeded not only in containing the enemy, but also in pushing him back from his original forward positions.”
Continuing in the same vein, Gen Malik goes on to say, “Hard battles are being fought all along in the Kargil sector. This intrusion by the enemy has thrown a big challenge before us…While our operational plans are being into action and preparations are afoot, Ministry of External Affairs is having diplomatic dialogue with Pakistan. This process, however, should not distract us from our mission. Our challenge clearly remains to rid our land of intruders. This mission has to be accomplished with all the resolve and fortitude at your command. May God be with you all and bestow glory on the Indian Army”.
