RSS’s intervention in forging a consensus over the BJP’s prime ministerial candidature was at full display Sunday with RSS number two Bhaiyyaji Joshi getting BJP patriarch L K Advani and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj to discuss the issue with BJP president Rajnath Singh in his presence at Advani’s residence. Sources said that Joshi first held one to one meeting with Advani Sunday and later Swaraj and Singh were also requested to join in to discuss the “pros and cons” of declaring Modi a candidate, well ahead of the Assembly elections. A section of party leaders suggested that the meeting marked the formal beginning of consultations on this issue. Shekhar Gupta’s column: Modi-hit

Advani,Swaraj and Murli Manohar Joshi are learnt to be withholding any decision on this issue till after the Assembly elections get over in four states crucial to the BJP,namely Chhattisgarh,Delhi,Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

But,a strong section of party leaders are believed to be in favour of early announcement, most likely by September itself. “Earlier, the better,” confided a senior BJP source summing up the sentiments of top BJP leaders considered Modi supporters.

Bhaiyyaji’s involvement indicated the keenness on the part of RSS to get Advani and Swaraj on board. But,Modi supporters appeared upbeat after the meeting suggesting that meeting had finally broken the ice by getting Advani and Swaraj to discuss the issue with the BJP president face to face.

RSS top brass is slated to hold the meeting with leaders of its affiliate organisations, like the BJP and VHP among others,on September 8 and 9 to discuss the political situation and bring more “coordination” among them in the run up to 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
