Amidst the preparations for Rahul Gandhis rally at Phulpur on November 14,a hoarding urging Rahul to take over the party’s leadership in view of Sonia Gandhis illness and drift in the government left the party red-faced on Saturday.
Mata bimaar, mantrimandal lachaar,Rahulji, netritva karo sweekar (Mother ill,Cabinet helpless,Rahul, accept leadership role), said the hoarding put up by Abhay Awasthi, alias Baba Awasthi,a Congressman and former state president of the Kisan Congress.
The party distanced itself from the act. By late afternoon, the poster was removed. Awasthi said he removed it after state party chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi called him up and told him that the poster was getting controversial.
Seedhi baat… baki sab bakwaas (straight talk… all the rest is nonsense), said the poster, which urged people to attend Rahul’s rally.
My intention was not to make a comment on anybody in particular. But the fact is that after Sonia Gandhi fell ill,the central team of ministers seem unable to face the onslaught that the party is facing from all sides, said Awasthi, who said he was state president of the Kisan Congress from 2006 to 2010.
Some people may not like what was stated in the poster, but it is necessary to do some tough talking in politics sometimes, he said.
Meanwhile,Union Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal clarified that this is not an official hoarding. He said: There are many workers of Congress, many of whom are not in the forefront. So who has done it and for what purpose is something yet to be found out.
