WITH no political consensus emerging on the Food Security Bill, the UPA government has finally decided to opt for the ordinance route. It is listed on the agenda of the next Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
Sources said the Cabinet could not discuss it last Tuesday as Food Minister K V Thomas failed to send the draft document in time. Thomas sent it to the Cabinet Secretariat two hours before the Cabinet meeting and therefore,it could not be circulated, said official sources.
Congress strategists have decided to push the ordinance despite NCP chief and union minister Sharad Pawar expressing reservations against it. The Congress plans to made food security and direct benefit transfer its main poll planks.
