Activist in centre of Shah Rukh Khan surrogacy row gets legal notice

Jaslok Hospital serves notice on Varsha Deshpande for maligning its image and that of its doctors.

Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre served a legal notice on activist Varsha Deshpande Friday for maligning its image and that of its doctors.

“This notice is being sent to you for maligning image of my clients (Jaslok Hospital) in respect of the issue of sex determination test allegedly done by Shah Rukh Khan. My clients state Firuza Parikh is a respected doctor who is director of IVF at Jaslok since 1989. As further instructed by my clients,I call upon you to forthwith give details of sources of the alleged information and tender an unconditional apology to my clients in both print and electronic media within 24 hours of receipt of this notice.”

Deshpande was quoted by the media that the hospital and director of its IVF centre Firuza Parekh allegedly told Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan sex of his surrogate child. Chief executing officer R R Pukgaonkar said Deshpande was lying but activist claimed she has proof to back her claim.

“If investigations are termed defamation,who will follow law? We are waiting for the government to initiate action. We have proof of the surrogacy and sex determination test,” she said.

Pulgaonkar said,“If Deshpande fails to apologise,we will prosecute her.”
