The doctors in Kolkata seem all set to go on a strike following conviction of two renowned physicians for ‘‘negligence and inappropriate treatment’’ that allegedly resulted in a patient’s death.

In an emergency meeting held today, the Indian Medical Association, Kolkata Branch, not only described the judgement of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, as ‘‘unfortunate, unacceptable and biased,’’ most of the members were in favour of a prolonged strike from next week. Though the date will be finalised at the council’s next meeting, emergency services will definitely be provided, a spokesman said.

The US-based complainant, Dr Kunal Saha, has directed his advocate for fresh appeal in the higher court for enhancement of the punishment for both Dr Sukumar Mukherjee and Dr Baidyanath Haldar and against the acquittal of a third doctor, Dr Abani Roy Choudhury, who was one of the accused.

Dr Saha’s wife Anuradha died after being shifted to Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai from the AMRI, Kolkata, in 1998. Yesterday’s judgement held the accused ‘‘responsible for causing the death of Anuradha Saha by their rash and negligent act of inappropriate treatment.’’

Both doctors and consumer bodies viewed the judgement as a precursor of things to come. The judgement has the potential of forcing both the sides to think strictly within a ‘‘medico-legal framework in future,’’ said Dr Subir Ganguly, IMA state unit president .

Dr Saha’s counsel said a case for compensation of Rs 77 crore was lodged in the National Commission for Redressal. The implication of the judgement would also have to be reassessed by the Medical Council. Some of the doctors said conviction in a criminal case might entail cancellation of their registration with the Medical Council. No official of the council could be contacted.
