India’s young golf stars, Shiv Kapur and Ashok Kumar, lead a strong Indian challenge at the $300,000 Macau open beginning tomorrow.

As many as a dozen Indians are in the field, which also includes former USPGA champion Steve Elkington. Thai sensation Prom Meesawat, who won the SK Telecom open two weeks ago, is also primed for a solid outing.

Ashok Kumar, who finished fifth after leading the field till the 65th hole at the Aamby Valley Asian Masters last week, was given a special entry by Asian tour and the golfer is now planning to a play a few more Asian tour events later this season.

“My ambition is to do well on Asian tour and then go to bigger tours,” said Ashok, who turned pro three years ago.

“I am looking forward to play in Macau as this is a chance for me to carry on some good golf, as I played well in Aamby except for last few holes,” he added.

Kapur, who is dividing his time between the Asian tour and playing on some invitations in Europe, was in action last week at the British masters and made the cut.

“These days all events on Asian tour are very competitive and we have a strong contingent from India, so anything can happen,” said Kapur, who also played the pro-am and is paired with Scott Strange and Anthony Kang in first two rounds.
