NEW DELHI, Aug 24: The Jain Commission, probing into the conspiracy angle of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, is likely to trace the growth of militancy in the country since 1981, a decade before the late premier’s killing, in its interim report scheduled to be submitted to the Home Minister in the next few days.

The interim report, which would not contain anything on the conspiracy to kill the former premier, would trace the growth of militancy from 1981 to 1991 with particular reference to presence of LTTE training camps in Tamil Nadu where the late premier was killed, besides the depositions by a host of senior politicians and top bureaucrats.

The report would mainly be focussed on the activities of various forces rather than holding any individual or group responsible for acts leading to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, they said.

The report is also likely to specifically go into the threat perceptions faced by Rajiv Gandhi after his demitting office. The voluminous report running into over 1,500 pages is based on the Commission proceedings covering two aspects of its investigation — one, the sequence of events since 1981 leading to the assassination and two, the facts and circumstances of the assassination.
