Friday saw the launch of the first female condom in India. The product is being offered as the only ‘female initiated prevention technology’.
Launched by Hindustan Latex Limited and Female Health Company of UK, the product claims it can be chosen over the male version as it gives women the freedom to choose.
‘‘Acceptability of female condoms has been studied in 30 countries including sub-Saharan countries. But before launching it in India, we thought of undertaking a study in three HIV prevalent states among high risk groups,’’ said Anne Philpott, coordinator of the studies undertaken in India.
The study lists partner perception and acceptance as a biggest barrier. Family Welfare Secretary P.K. Hota said: ‘‘It would strengthen the national AIDS prevention programme by reducing female dependence upon the male partner to practice safe sex.’’
Representatives from NGOs said the female condom was not being accepted by married couples and homosexual men.
Health Secretary J.V.R. Prasada Rao maintained the product needs to be studied before including it in the NACO programme.
