The news from the ringside seems to get better with each passing day.

The medal tally continues to increase as world cadet champion Sunil Kumar (51kg), along with T Nanao Singh (48kg) and Rakesh Kalaskar (60kg), entered the finals of their respective weight categories at the 5th Commonwealth Boxing championships in Liverpool today.

Chief coach G Manoharan had identified these boxers as medal prospects before leaving for the English town, and his faith in them seems to be justified as the Indian team is assured of at least three silver medals.

Seventeen-year-old Sunil blanked Malaysian K A M Abd 21-0 to set up a summit clash with local challenge P Butler. Nanao Singh got the better of another Malaysian — M Z Azizi — 26-18 to advance to the final, where his opponent will be P Barnes.

Rakesh warded off a late challenge from Tanzanian PC Mtagwa to beat him 22-20. He will take on T Stalker.
