‘Indian doctors are among the best’

On the fourth day of the 68th annual conference Association of Surgeons of India (ASICON-2008), a banquet was organised at Harsheela Resort last evening.

On the fourth day of the 68th annual conference Association of Surgeons of India (ASICON-2008), a banquet was organised at Harsheela Resort last evening. The banquet was attended by Dr AR Kidwai, Governor of Haryana, Dr S S Gill, Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Medical Sciences, Dr M S Kang, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, Dr Abdul Ahmed Hai, president ASI, and the organising secretary Dr Kuldip Singh.

On the occasion, Dr Kidwai said medical science is the fastest growing science and Indian doctors are among the best in the world. He said there is a great scope for the development of surgery and such conferences are a boon for the young surgeons. He said Indian surgeons are known for their skills because of which people prefer to come here for treatment.

A cultural programme was held for the entertainment of the delegates. On the penultimate day of ASICON 2008, about 200 research papers were presented. A symposium on hernia surgery was held during which various surgeons discussed the various methods of hernia surgery and special emphasis was held on the complications of hernia surgery. A symposium on laparoscopic in semi-urban and rural India was also held.

According to Dr Madhu Shekhar there are very few laparoscopic surgeons in the rural and semi-urban areas. People in the rural areas are still undergo the conventional surgery, but the overall cost of laparoscopy surgery is less as the patient is back to work soon.

Dr G V Rao delivered a talk on NOTES (natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery). According to him this is a new technique in which no cut is made on the body and surgery is done through natural orifices like mouth, rectum and vagina. He said that this is a very advanced surgery and is being in the experimental stage. A surgical quiz for the resident surgeons was held.
