Subramaniam Badrinath, wearing the blue jersey of the Indian team, was a rare spectator at the Cricket Club of India today, watching a practice match between Mumbai XI and England Lions.
Badrinath, Tamil Nadu’s captain and middle-order batsman, landed in the city to play South Zone’s Duleep Trophy game at the Wankhede Stadium. He is waiting for his chance after scoring heavily in domestic cricket.
“Who is playing in this England side?” he asked, recalling his Duleep Trophy high. “I still remember, we chased 502 runs in the Duleep Trophy against England A in 2003. I scored an unbeaten hundred and Venugopal Rao scored a double. It was the biggest chase of the Duleep Trophy.” The England A side then comprised Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior and Sajid Mahmood who went on to represent their senior national team. South Zone are scheduled to play their Duleep Trophy match against East Zone at the Wankhede Stadium on February 3.
Though Badrinath has been a consistent performer and topped the batting charts, the Chennai batsman is still struggling to find a place in the India side. After his fine showing with India A in Zimbabwe and Kenya, the 27-year-old was selected for the home one-day series against Australia.
“I was hoping to get a chance this time for one-day series in Australia, I was there in the squad when they last visited us. Tell me what more shall I do? I can score runs, that’s it,” a disappointed Badrinath said.
