Gujarat IPS officer found guilty in copying case

Rajnish Rai, an IPS officer who was accused of copying during his first year LLB exam was on Sunday found guilty by the Gujarat University (GU) Reforms committe and was declared failed in all the subjects for year 2007-08.

However, Rai, who appeared before the Reform Committee on Sunday around 1145 hours, said he was not aware of the decision and was not told about the penalty even after a meeting that lasted more than half an hour.

“I was summoned at a very short notice. I received the letter only yesterday. Today also I reiterated my demand and asked them to provide me with copies of evidence that they have against me, as directed by the Gujarat High Court. But I did not get anything,” Rai a 1992 batch IPS officer said.

“I don’t know about the conclusion of the meeting. It was adjourned after 30 minutes of discussion,” Rai added.

Announcing the vedict, one of the members of the five-member GU Reform Committee J J Patel said, “We have examined 23 cases of cheating today including that of IPS officer Rajnish Rai.”

“Based on the evidence and independent statements of individuals we found him guilty under GU rules and have awarded him penalty of F+0, which means he will be declared failed in all subjects he appeared for this year. He can appear for examination next year,” Patel said.
