NEW DELHI, Aug 6: The Centre reiterated its commitment to unravel the truth behind the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in the Lok Sabha today at the end of more than 14 hours of debate on the Jain Commission final report and the accompanying ATR.

Replying to the debate, Union Home Minister L K Advani said the proposed MDMA would follow the suggestions of the Jain Commission and probe further wherever suggested. He added any recommendations from the Congress which can help resolve the issue would be welcome. Advani’s reply ended a largely sterile debate on the issue with the Congress taking a soft stand on the DMK and other parties making their own political points.

Advani said the involvement of a foreign hand in Rajiv’s assassination would be looked into by the MEA, the Union Home Ministry and intelligence agencies. He felt Rajiv’s gruesome assassination was a national tragedy and there is a feeling that some foreign countries treated India as a “soft state”.

He said besides the 41 accused named bythe designated court, the Jain Commission had directed the probe the role of other people which the Centre would follow. After Advani’s reply, the House adjourned sine die. Earlier, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivraj Patil, Buta Singh and others took part in the debate.
