
Jenny, Thorpe sink world marks
SYDNEY: Jenny Thompson (US) the women’s 100 metres butterfly World record at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championship, here, today. Her timing of 57.88 seconds broke compatriot Mary Meagher’s erstwhile record of 57.93 secs, set in August 1981. Earlier, Australia’s Ian Thorpe shattered the 200 metres freestyle World record in a semi-final heat. Thorpe swam 1:46:34 to break team-mate Grant Hackett’s record of 1:46:67 set in March 1999. Thorpe had set a World record on the opening day, shattering Kieren Perkins’ five-year-old 400m freestyle.
Drunk Rodman arrested in nightclub
LOS ANGELES: Basketball bad boy Dennis Rodman (38) was arrested for allegedly being drunk in public after a nightclub owner called police out of fear the flamboyant NBA star would start a brawl, police said. Rodman refused police requests to take a taxi home and told officers he planned to continue drinking at other bars. Officers then arrested him on the misdemeanor charge of publicintoxication. Rodman’s arraignment is set for October 1.
Probe into equestrian safety launched
LONDON: A safety probe was launched today after the death of Britisher Polly Phillipps, the third rider killed on cross-country courses since May. Phillipps, centre of a doping scandal at last year’s World Equestrian Games in Italy, was crushed to death by her horse Coral Cove in a competition in Scotland yesterday.
The 30-year-old rider died of head injuries when Coral Cove somersaulted on top of her.
Keane powers Manchester United win
LONDON: Roy Keane’s two-goal haul enabled Manchester United to a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Highbury and shoot them to the top of the English Premiership. Fredrik Ljungberg’s 41st minute goal gave Arsenal the lead at half-time.
Keane scored the equaliser in the 58th minute and, with two minutes to go, scored the match winner.
