FOR its ‘‘fearless and comprehensive’’ reporting of the Gujarat riots and their aftermath, The Indian Express has been chosen for the first International Press Institute (IPI) India Award for Outstanding Work in Journalism. The Express coverage has been described as ‘‘the best example of furtherance of public interest by a newspaper’’.
The announcement was made today by the Indian chapter of IPI, the Vienna-based global forum of editors, publishers and senior executives from the media.
The jury, headed by Justice A.S. Anand, chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), chose The Indian Express for its coverage of ‘‘the Gujarat Riots and the Aftermath of the Tragedy’’ from among 24 entries from print, electronic media and individual journalists.
The award, which carries Rs 2 lakh, a trophy and a citation, will be presented by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat to The Indian Express at a function on February 23.
IPI India had instituted the annual award to recognise and honour the best work done by an Indian media organisation or journalist in furtherance of public interest, including safeguarding the freedom of the press and other freedoms such as human rights.

‘Tribute to those who risked to tell the truth’

‘‘On behalf of The Indian Express, it’s an honour to accept the IPI India Award,’’ said Editor-in-Chief and CEO Shekhar Gupta today. ‘‘But it’s more than that. It’s a tribute to those who were killed, who couldn’t tell us their stories. To those who took—and are taking—enormous risks to share the truth with us. “It’s also a testimony to our unique community of readers who won’t settle for anything less than world-class journalism. ‘‘And to our reporters and editors who work to deliver that. For all of us at Express, it’s a coincidence but an appropriate one: the award comes in the centenary year of our founder, the late Ram Nath Goenka, who defined for us the value that IPI celebrates: journalism of courage,’’ he said. |
