An early morning spin at the Marine Drive proved to be the last one for four youths who died after their Ford Icon rammed a parked civic body dumper, also killing a municipal worker.
With Yash Shah (20) behind the wheels, six friends, all college students from South Mumbai, were on a drive on the New Year day when the car crashed into the dumper at around 6.30 am opposite the Taraporewala Aquarium near Savitribai Phule Hostel. Yash, Somil Gaddha (20), Bhavin Gandhi (19) and Nitesh Damania (17) died on the spot of head injuries along with Sundar Sahu (35), who was a cleaner on the dumper.
Two others, Umang Saraiya (17) and Aftab Mujavar (18), were rushed to hospital and are under observation. According to the police, the car was speeding from the Mafatlal Bath towards the Air India building.
“It’s too premature to say that it’s a case of drunk driving. We can give a statement when the post-mortem reports are out,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Brijesh Singh. The police have registered a case of accident.
