People in the peaceful locality of Prabhat Road in Pune were shocked after learning that an elderly doctor was stabbed to death in his bungalow on Monday morning.

Initially, the police suspected robbery to be the motive behind 66-year-old Dr Vijay Ramchandra Ghaisas’s murder. However, an examination of the body revealed 52 wounds on the face, hands and stomach, hinting pre-planned murder. Police suspect there were three people involved in the murder.

Ghaisas was staying alone in his bungalow since the past two months after his wife left for the US. On Monday morning, the maid, Vithabai, found the front door locked. On entering the house through the rear door, she saw a youth running out the front door. She was suddenly overpowered by two other persons who pushed her into the bathroom and fled.

When she walked into the house, she found the doctor lying in a pool of blood. On seeing Vithabai, he tried to utter something, but she was unable to comprehend and ran to call anesthesist Dr Ajit Agashe, a neighbour.

“Three kinds of weapons were used to assault the doctor. While a knife was used to stab him in the stomach, a sickle and a chopper were used to assault him on the face and hands. No robber would inflict so many injuries if he was there to just loot the house,” said Inspector Jayawant Deshmukh.

“He had stab injuries on his stomach and slash marks on his hands, probably from trying to defend himself,” said Dr M P Khaladkar, a friend.
