MUMBAI, September 16: Convent Mary girls narrowly beat holders Mary’s Immaculate Girls, Borivli to clinch the Girls U-14 division title in the DSO Inter-school basketball tournament at Indian Gymkhana today. M Shreya contributed 13 points, and R Karen 7 as Convent Mary won 27-24. The boys U-14 title was clinched by Madanpura, who relied on the tall Siraj Ansari and Afzal Shaikh to humble Don Bosco, Borivli 32-8.

All the winners will represent Mumbai in the state-level championship, a lead-up to the National School Games.

Gautam in quarters

Top seed Vivek Gautam sailed into the quarter-finals of the Maharashtra state selection badminton tournament at MIG Club today, thrashing Abhijit Ayrekar in straight sets. Gautam dropped just six points, winning 15-4, 15-2. Other players to book quarter-final berths were Amogh Kulkarni, Sanket Shetty, Yogesh Padukone, Murli Subramanian, Vinayak Puthran, Mayur Tawde and Vikrant Patwardhan.

Niharika Thakkar of Jankidevi School, Purva Variyar (Gokuldham), and Leann Almeida and Saloni Balgi (Mary Immaculate) won all their three games in the girls under-14 category to take joint lead in the Inter-Schools Chess Tournament.

In under-16 girls section, Priyanka Vora (JB Vaccha), Yogita Yevle (Parle Tilak), Suvidha Patil (IES, Dadar), manisha Chelani (Mt. Mary) and Purva Pathre (Gokuldham) share the lead with three points.

In boys under-14 section, top seed Akash Khalwadekar and Ambar Khalwadekar, Varun Dattani and Kabir Malhotra of Cathedral lead with two points after two rounds.
