
Chandigarh, Aug 5: Chandigarh will host three international tennis tournaments in the remaining season including December’s $10,000 ITF women’s tennis. The All India Tennis Associaton (AITA) offered three events to the city and Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Associaton (CLTA) has decided to conduct all the tourneys, a spokesman said here.
The $10,000 ITF men’s future circuit tournament (January, 2000) and ITF junior tournament (February, 2000) are the other tourneys CLTA will organise during the season.
The CLTA has also decided to conduct at ITF level-1 coaching camp next month where as many as 20 top coaches would participate. Upcoming players from the city have been doing exceptionally well with Akshay Vishal Rao (under-18), Sunil Kumar (U-16) and Chatwinder singh (u-14) ranked top in their respective age categories.
Akshay Vishal Rao and Sunil Kumar have been selected by ITF for playing on the European circuit, CLTA announced at its annual general body meeting here.
National Sports Day
Federation of Indian Games will organise tournaments in various disciplines from August 23 to 29 to coincide with the National Sports Day (August 29) in memory of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. Competitions in hockey (girls), football, kho-kho (girls), volleyball and basketball will be conducted. An award function to honour veteran international players from the Armed Forces will be held, according to Olympian and Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok Kumar.
