BSP wins Hardoi bypoll

Nitin Agrawal of the BSP has won the byelection to the Hardoi Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Nitin Agrawal of the BSP has won the byelection to the Hardoi Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He defeated his nearest rival and Samajwadi Party’s nominee Sukh Sagar Mishra by a margin of more than 17,000 votes. Congress candidate Mithilesh Kumar Singh lost his security deposits. The BJP had not fielded any candidate for the byelection.

The byelection was necessitated after Nitin’s father Naresh Agrawal, who was a minister in the previous Mulayam Government, deserted the SP and joined the BSP. Naresh Agrawal would now try his luck from Farrukhabad Lok Sabha seat as the BSP nominee. A known turncoat of UP politics, Naresh was also associated with the Congress in the past.

According to UP’s Chief Electoral Office, the BSP candidate bagged 65,533 votes while the SP’s nominee got about 48,000 votes. The Congres candidate could secure only 5,737 votes. In all, there were 12 candidates in the fray.

In a press release, UP Chief Minister Mayawati expressed her gratitude to the people for the party’s victory. She described the party’s success in the byelection as the victory of the party’s principle of “Sarvajan Hitaya-Sarvajan Sukhay”.
