
SEPT 17: Defending champions Bombay Gymkhana extended their hold over The Famous Grouse All-India and South Asia rugby tournament, retaining the trophy with a convincing win over La Martiniere Old Boys. In the final, played at the Calcutta Cricket & Football Club ground on Saturday, Bombay Gymkhana, with a mix of youth and experience, outplayed their rivals from Calcutta in all departments of the game to prevail 30-13. With every player pitting in with his might, Bombay Gymkhana scored through tries from Kunal Bhansali, captain Chaitanya Singh, Faizal Siddiqui, Muffazal Indorewala and Rahul Bose to knock the stuffing out of the youthful LMoB side. Steven Moulder completed the tally for Bombay Gymkhana with one conversion and one penalty. LMoB, who began well and kept level with Bombay Gymkhana in the initial stages of the match, scored two tries through Howard Hooper, but with the other players not able to raise the level of their game, they could not prevent Bombay Gymkhana from pulling ahead. Gerard Menezesmanaged to add three points in the later stage of the match through a penalty. Earlier, in the Loser’s Plate final, Bangalore beat Young Rugby Club 33-7.
Rajiv Sathe of Bombay Gymkhana was adjudged the “most valuable player” of the tournament.
