Bid to ‘cold-shoulder’ doc manhandling case opposed

The medical fraternity at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital are sore over the silence maintained by the hospital management following the incident involving beating up of a doctor by the relatives of a patient.

It was on Saturday that angry relatives of a 35-year-old Sushma Sharma, who had died of leukemia in the hospital, had manhandled a doctor. She was admitted to the hospital on the same say. Dr B.S. Shah, medical superintendent, DMCH, while addressing the mediapersons informed that, “It was on Saturday afternoon the patient was admitted in the hospital. She was suffering from the blood cancer and her condition was serious. Dr Alok Jain, Resident Doctor, who was posted in the Emergency ward was trying to revive the patient who however died by night.”

Dr Shah said that patient’s condition was very critical she was brought into the hospital. Her platelet count was 5,000 only whereas in a normal human being, the platelets varied from 1.5 lakh to 2.5 lakh. “After the patient died, the relatives first broke open the door of the washroom, and then beat up the doctor. It was only after the security personnel intervened that the doctor was saved. There were about five people who attacked Dr Jain,” informed Dr Shah.

With the hospital authourities silent over the issue, the resident doctors of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital gathered on Monday morning to lodge a protest against the manhandling of a resident doctor by patient’s attendants. The resident doctors said that the security in the hospital was not up to the mark to handle such incidents. The resident doctors have given the management 48 hours to take action in the matter or else face a stir. The doctors have decided to go for a silent protest meanwhile.

However, Prem Gupta, Secretary, DMCH management, said that security at the hospital had been beefed up and the hospital management had also lodged an FIR against the relatives.
