Wijk An Zee, January 17: Viswanathan Anand outplayed Loek van Wely of the Netherlands to score his first win of the ongoing Hoogovens International Grandmasters chess tournament, according to reports reaching here. In the second round, Anand, who drew his first game against Jan Timman, took 42 moves before Wely accepted defeat when an exchange down.

Meanwhile, Vladmir Kramnik recorded his second straight win beating Frisco Nijboer, who created a sensation on the first day by holding Anatoly Karpov to a draw. Kramnik was once again in a punishing mood crushing his opponent in 29 moves after yet another Nf3 opening. His first moves were the same as he played against Jeroen Piket in the opening round.

Anatoly Karpov played his second draw in a row, this time against the strong Michael Adams, after 33 moves, while Paul van der Sterren and Boris Gelfand drew after 31 moves.
