MUMBAI, MAY 28: A fourteen-year-old boy was arrested by the Vakola police after he attempted to rape a six-year-old girl in a slum at Santacruz (east) late last night.

According to the police, Prafful was caught red-handed in the act of trying to sexually abuse the girl after undressing her. The accused had entrapped the victim by pretending to play games with her, added the police.

Alarmed over Prafful’s obscene overtures towards the victim, the girl’s aunt Anaradevi Gupta alerted the neighbours. They chased the accused and beat him up before handing him over to the police.

According to the deputy commissioner of police, crime, K L Prasad, this incident marks the second rape in the week, and the fifth in the last fortnight. FIfty-three rapes have been committed in the last five months alone. Prasad attributes this to the negative influences of movies on youngsters.
