DIRECTOR: Pavan Kirpalani
CAST: Jimmy Shergill, Nusrat Bharucha, Arif Zakaria, Asif Basra
Confession: I am very scared of horror films. I was all set to see this one from under my chair, or making a lattice with my fingers and peering through. And Darr @ the Mall did give me a couple of jumpy moments. But at no point did I feel like diving below, or closing my eyes. In fact, by the second half, I was trying hard not to be impatient or fidget, or close my eyes for other reasons.
Why are so many Bollywood horror films so darn awful?
It begins well, when Vishnu (Shergill) walks into a large mall at night, and asks to become security in-charge. A mall is scary even in broad daylight, with all those AC ducts recycling stale air, and flinty-eyed ladies overloaded with shopping bags, and maids standing by the table overseeing bratty kids as their maaliks eat overpriced junk in ill-lit restaurants. At night, it is a nightmare.
Vishnu and a bunch of others find themselves stranded, and as they are picked up one by one, and done to a nasty end, the mystery is unravelled. Many years ago, a nun and some kids had been torched to death by some nasties, and plink, everything falls into place, just as bloodied bodies keep falling around us.
After a while, you give up. Because there is nothing to be feared from this predictable tale, other than dullness.
Come back, Ram Gopal Varma, all is forgiven.
