The senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Muzaffarnagar has suspended eight policemen on charges of “misbehaving” with members of a panchayat organised to seek justice in the alleged murders of three criminals, who were found dead on the terrace of a house on September 21.

While top officials claimed that the suspension was based on the “insensitive approach” of the police, the victims’ kin claimed that the action was a clear indication of the officers’ “guilt”.

Mystery shrouds the deaths of the three youths — Gaurav from Shamli, Deepak Rathi from Baraut in Baghpat and Sachin from Baghpat — in Ghatipura village under Mansoorpur police station. The police had claimed that the deceased were killed by a friend and not in an encounter. Another theory of theirs is that the three committed suicide because they were afraid of being arrested. Several arms and cartridges were recovered from the possession of the deceased, claimed police officers, who also said that the three were wanted history-sheeters.
