AS MANY as 50 unidentified men were booked for rioting after some lawyers and members of alleged right-wing organisations attacked a police team in a Agra court on Monday.

Police said a couple — a Muslim boy and a Hindu girl, both adults — reached the court on Monday to enquire about the procedure of getting married. At the court, a relative of the girl saw the two together and informed her family, said sources. Following this, some alleged right-wing activists reportedly arrived at the court and caught hold of the couple.

As the police were called in, the mob thrashed the boy inside the court. As the policemen tried to save him and take him to the police jeep, the mob pelted stones on them. The jeep was also damaged. Police later resorted to lathicharge to disburse the crowd.

While the police managed to take the boy to the police station, the girl was also sent to a woman police station. They have not been arrested. “An FIR was lodged against 50 to 60 unidentified men for obstructing police work and rioting… Both the boy and the girl are adults. But the girl is married,” said SP (City) Sushil Dhule.
