Here are 5 animals who can hear ultrasonic sounds

By listening to returning sound waves, whales can navigate and locate prey in the dark.

Ultrasonic sounds are high-frequency sound waves that exceed 20,000 hertz, making them too high-pitched for human ears to detect. These sound waves vibrate more than 20,000 times per second.

Doctors use ultrasonic waves in medical imaging. “Ultrasound probes send harmless ultrasonic waves into the body. Different tissues reflect these waves differently. By capturing the echoes, an ultrasound machine can help doctors identify heart defects or tumours. Ultrasound machines can even create images of foetuses during pregnancy,” reported Science Direct.

While humans are unable to hear ultrasonic sounds, many animals rely on them for communication, navigation, and even hunting. For a long time, researchers believed animals used the same biomechanical pathways and molecules to process both ultrasonic frequencies and lower-frequency sounds, but recent studies suggested they may have specialised adaptations for detecting these high-pitched signals.

Here are five creatures with superior hearing abilities that can detect and interpret ultrasonic frequencies:

Dogs

Dogs can hear frequencies up to 45,000 hertz, approximately, far beyond human capabilities. This helps them detect high-pitched noises like dog whistles and those produced by rodents.

Whales

Whales use ultrasonic sounds for echolocation, a method that allows them to navigate and find prey in dark or murky waters. They produce sound waves that bounce off objects, and by listening to the returning echoes, they can determine the location and size of objects. Some whales can hear frequencies as high as 200,000 hertz.

Mice

Beyond their familiar squeaks, mice use ultrasonic vocalisations for social communication––between mothers and pups, during courtship, and in aggressive interactions.

Cats

Cats have some of the most sensitive hearing among land mammals. They can detect sounds ranging from 50 hertz to approximately 80,000 hertz. Unlike most mammals, whose middle ear has a single chamber, a cat’s middle ear has two, allowing for a broader range of sound detection. This exceptional hearing helps them locate small prey, such as rodents, which often communicate in ultrasonic frequencies.

Bats

Bats rely on echolocation to navigate and hunt insects in total darkness. They emit ultrasonic sound waves, which bounce off objects and return as echoes. Bats’ ears, finely tuned to recognise these echoes, allow them to detect obstacles, track prey, and avoid predators with remarkable precision.
