Neena Gupta is always candid and often drops truth bombs while interacting with her social media fans. So, it was no different when she recently passed on a few words of wisdom to her daughter Masaba. The fashion designer shared the video on Instagram, captioning it “She has spoken.”

“Forget a big house, big car. Do your work. You will get respect. You will get money. Nothing else matters,” Neena, 65, said.

“Even if you commute by an auto-rickshaw, people will respect you. No one respects you if you have a big car. I have realised that. Kaam kar. Acha kaam kar. (Do your work. Do good work.) Bas. That’s it,” the Badhaai Do actor added.

Taking a cue from her pearls of wisdom, let’s examine how one earns respect in a society that constantly judges its own.

Unlike superficial impressions based on appearance or charm, respect earned through demonstrated competence has remarkable staying power, withstanding time and changing circumstances, shared Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M) psychotherapist, founder and director, Gateway of Healing.

This phenomenon operates across all fields, from creative industries to corporate environments, entrepreneurial ventures, and public service.

The psychological benefits of respect-based success prove equally significant. “When achievement flows from genuine ability rather than manipulation or chance, individuals experience “authentic pride” – a powerful emotional reinforcement that fuels continued quality work and resilience during challenges. This contrasts sharply with the anxiety and insecurity that plague those who achieve success through less substantial means,” said Dr Tugnait.

Unlike advantages of birth or circumstance, the ability to do good work remains democratically available, making this pathway to respect, success, and financial well-being attainable for anyone willing to invest in quality over convenience. “Financial rewards follow this virtuous cycle through multiple pathways. In immediate terms, respected work commands premium compensation. Beyond that, opportunities for advancement, partnership, and leadership naturally gravitate toward those with proven track records,” shared Dr Tugnait.

Perhaps valuably, the reputation built through consistent quality creates long-term financial security that transcends economic fluctuations or industry disruptions.
