It’s very good for your skin,” he said on the show, even as the hosts appeared shocked.
But does cold water splashes work better than dunking your face in ice water? Let’s find out.
Dr Ajay Dodeja, junior consultant, dermatology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that cold water splashes and ice bowl dunking are undeniably skincare trends, and for good reason. “Both constrict blood vessels to calm puffiness and leave skin feeling instantly fresh and taut. However, when it relates to a daily skincare routine, cold water splashes have proven to be gentler and more practical than dunking one’s face in ice-cold water,” said Dr Dodeja.
According to Dr Dodeja, ice dunking can sometimes be very shocking to the skin and may cause redness or broken capillaries, particularly in individuals with sensitive or dry skin. “On the contrary, cold water splashes refresh skin without such a sudden drop in temperature,” said Dr Dodeja.

So what really happens to our skin when we splash cold water?
Cold water temporarily constricts pores, reduces surface inflammation, and improves microcirculation. “The cold water will also help to rinse away residual makeup, sunscreen, and dirt that might have been missed through regular cleansing. Think of it as a simple, natural ‘wake-up call’ for the skin, it energises without irritating. Over time, it can improve the overall tone and reduce morning puffiness,” said Dr Dodeja.
How often should you do it?
Dr Dodeja said that doing 30–50 splashes a day, “100 if you feel like it, is harmless for most people, but those who have sinus problems, migraines, or rosacea should avoid very low temperatures. “Always use cool or room-temperature water. Also, make sure to never scrub harshly; gentle, upward splashes are what you need,” said Dr Dodeja.
Will cold water replace your skin care products?
Not really, affirmed the expert. “It is a great add-on, not a replacement. You still need a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen in your routine. Cold water can enhance their effects by improving blood flow and tightening the skin surface, but it cannot hydrate or protect your skin of its own accord,” said Dr Dodeja.
Remember that good sleep, hydration, and a balanced diet are still your best beauty filters.
