What does the removal of world’s largest, heaviest kidney stone tell us about renal health

"This extraordinary case underscores the critical importance of not ignoring kidney stone symptoms. Prompt medical intervention, including proper diagnosis, treatment, and management, is essential to prevent the progression of kidney stones and the associated complications," said Dr Vamshi Krishna Consultant Urologist CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills Hyderabad

There are a few world records that we don’t intend to make, but end up making nevertheless. One such inadvertent Guinness World Record is held by a 62-year-old retired soldier Canistus Coonghe of Sri Lanka. Coonghe broke two world records after a 13.37 cm (5.26 in) in length and 10.55 cm (4.15 in) in width stone was removed from his kidney. It is the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone ever recorded. The stone was in fact even larger than Coonghe’s actual kidney, which has a bipolar length of 11.8cm (4.6 in). The stone weighed 800 g (1.76 lb). “That’s roughly the same weight as five baseballs,” the Guinness World Record said in a release.

The previous record was 620 g (1.36 lb), set by Wazir Muhammad (Pakistan) in 2008.

The urological team at Army Hospital, Colombo, Sri Lanka identified the record-breaking kidney stone in Coonghe’s right kidney. Coonghe had to undergo a procedure called open pyelolithotomy to get rid of the stone. The operation was performed by Dr Kugadas Sutharshan on 1 June.

According to the doctors, fortunately, despite the blockage, Coonghe’s kidney was still functioning normally. He is now recovering well.

Speaking with indianexpress.com, Dr Vamshi Krishna Consultant Urologist CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills Hyderabad shared, “The medical community was astounded by a recent case in Sri Lanka, where a man underwent surgery to remove the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone. The extraordinary size of the stone serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of ignoring kidney stone symptoms. This rare and alarming case highlights the importance of timely intervention and appropriate medical treatment for kidney stones”.

Kidney stones are hard deposits that form in the kidneys and can cause excruciating pain and discomfort when they obstruct the urinary tract. The symptoms of kidney stones often include severe lower back pain, blood in the urine, frequent urination, and a burning sensation during urination. If left untreated, kidney stones can lead to severe complications, including infection, kidney damage, and even renal failure.

“The case in question involved a Sri Lankan man who had been experiencing persistent lower back pain and intermittent bouts of hematuria (blood in the urine). Unfortunately, he chose to ignore these symptoms, assuming they were temporary and would resolve on their own. This decision proved to be perilous, as the kidney stone continued to grow over time, ultimately reaching an astonishing size,” commented Dr Krishna.

Talking about the surgical procedure done on Coonghe, Dr Krishna said that it involved making a small incision in the patient’s back and utilizing specialized instruments to break down the stone into smaller fragments. “The fragments were then meticulously removed from the kidney. Following the successful surgery, the patient experienced immediate relief from his symptoms,” he said.
