(Source: Freepik)Hair has the power to make or break a look. A gorgeous outfit and stunning makeup are best complemented by thick, luscious hair—styled or not. Whether you’re leaving your hair down or attempting an elaborate updo inspired by your favourite actor, damaged hair is a big no-no. Hair serums come in handy, smoothing flyaways and taming an unruly mane.
Indianexpress.com spoke to Dr Pravin Banodkar, dermatologist and co-founder of Skin Beyond Borders (SkinBB), to understand which hair serum you should opt for and when.
According to Banodkar, anti-frizz serums present in the market help protect against humidity and are great for those with curly, wavy, or even frizzy hair. “People with dry hair should look for hydrating serums when going on a skincare spree. They help lock in moisture while successfully combating dryness caused by the cold weather,” he said.
Banodkar recommended volumising serums for those with flat hair. These can work best to give hair that extra volume. “In case, if your hair is damaged, then applying a bond-repairing serum can be beneficial for strengthening your damaged locks,” he said.

During winter, the temperature drops, and humidity levels decrease significantly. This can lead to dryness in both the hair and scalp, further aggravated by indoor heating, which can cause more harm to your hair than you might expect. In such cases, Banodkar recommended using hydrating hair serums, as they help maintain moisture levels while preventing excessive dryness and roughness. “These serums act as protective shields, safeguarding hair from harsh environmental conditions,” he said, adding, “When in doubt, always consult a dermatologist to find the serum best suited for your hair type and concerns.”
