Mira Kapoor on how she lost postpartum weight with walking (Source: Mira Kapoor/Instagram)
Mira Kapoor, who always advocates for simple and close-to-nature living, recently revealed in an Ask-Me-Anything session on her Instagram Stories that she walked 7 km every day on the beach to reduce postpartum weight after the birth of her second child, Zain. “I walked 7kms daily on the beach after my second child. Worked really well,” said Mira, adding that she consulted nutritionist Pooja Makhija, who “didn’t starve me, so milk supply was intact”.
Recall that Mira has always been vocal about her pregnancy journey as well as her fitness and lifestyle choices.
Affirming that postpartum walks of 7 kilometers or more can be beneficial for new mothers, Dr Sushruta Mokadam, consultant obstetrician at Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, Pune said it’s crucial to approach such activities with consideration for individual health and recovery.
Dr Mokadam explained that the appropriateness of a 7-kilometer walk depends on factors such as the mother’s overall health, delivery method, and postpartum recovery. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before engaging in intense physical activity postpartum.
“Gentle exercise, including walking, can promote physical well-being, help in weight management, and enhance mood through the release of endorphins,” said Dr Mokadam.

Additionally, it engages your leg muscles and can help strengthen them, which can be beneficial post-motherhood, shared Dr Shalini Vijay, senior consultant, obstetrician, and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Lullanagar, Pune.
Gradually increasing the distance and intensity of walks allows the body to adapt, reducing the risk of strain or injury. “Walking also provides an opportunity for mothers to get fresh air, clear their minds, and, if desired, engage in social interactions, which can positively impact mental health,” said Dr Mokadam.
So, while postpartum walks can contribute to a mother’s well-being, it’s crucial to “prioritise gradual progression and seek professional advice” to ensure a safe and healthy postpartum exercise routine.
Precautions
a. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine during pregnancy to ensure it’s safe for your specific situation, said Dr Shalini.
b. Choose a flat and safe surface to walk to minimise the risk of falling or tripping.
c. If you experience any pain, discomfort, dizziness, or other unusual symptoms while walking, stop immediately and consult your healthcare provider.
