Virat Kohli. who captains the Indian cricket team, has been named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s Person of the Year for 2019.

Kohli’s efforts to improve conditions for animals includes sending a letter on PETA India’s behalf to officials calling for the release of the elephant Malti, who was used for rides at Amer Fort and was reportedly violently beaten by eight men. He supported PETA India’s call for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to be updated for stronger penalties to animal abusers. He reportedly swung by an animal shelter in Bengaluru to give lots of love to the injured and formerly neglected dogs, while appealing to fans to adopt companion animals instead of buying them from breeders or pet shops.
