Michelin Star Chef and filmmaker Vikas Khanna has made the nation proud by taking Indian cuisine to the global audience. A few weeks back, he added yet another feather to his cap by featuring on the list of ‘Top 10 Chefs in the World’ by Vanity Fair. “I was honoured to be one of the first person of colour on this exclusive list,” he wrote on Instagram.

Khanna acknowledged that for most of his career, he had the honour of breaking stereotypes globally – “on what I will do and how I dream about our country’s representation”. However, he was told “just the opposite” when he was in school, he shared.

“Once a teacher told me not to smile with my ugly bunny teeth and for years, I would smile with sealed lips. I was suspended from school for writing an original essay on my mother instead of just copy-pasting like everyone else,” Khanna wrote.

He added that some teachers made fun of him because he repeated a few classes and failed a few times. “I would study with students’ younger siblings and be humiliated for that all the time,” he shared, adding that some teachers laughed with kids as he walked with his wooden shoes instead of asking them to shut up.

Khanna, who was awarded a Michelin Star by the Michelin Guide for six consecutive years since 2011, was told by cooking instructors to stop dreaming about Michelin Stars. “Some teachers would make fun of my mother and me serving at home banquets. Nothing heals the scars of the destroyed confidence. Nothing,” he wrote.

But, the celebrated chef could ignore this and move on only because of his family’s love. “But sometimes we dismiss the role of teachers beyond the syllabus. If they treat us as small and useless……it gives permission to everyone to behave badly with the child. I am sending this message to lots of kids to focus on their infinite and limitless inner strength. Focus on the potentiality and not actuality. Only you know your true power,” he concluded.
