Ugadi, Gudi Padwa 2025: Telugu New Year Day, or Ugadi is the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar, widely celebrated by Hindus in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka with great enthusiasm. Whereas the same festival is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and as Yugadi in Karnataka, it marks the arrival of spring and the reaping of rabi crops.
Ugadi and Gudi Padwa is marked on the first day of the lunisolar calendar Hindu month of Chaitra, which is late March or early April in the Gregorian calendar. In 2025, they are falling on March 30, 2025, a Sunday, coinciding with the start of another auspicious Hindu festival, Chaitra Navratri.

Ugadi 2025: Know more about the Telugu New Year
Ugadi (also known as ‘Yugadi’ — ‘yug’, meaning ‘age’, and ‘adi’, meaning ‘a new beginning’) is a major festival observed in the southern states of Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh that marks the beginning of a new year, which is why it is called ‘Telugu New Year’.
People dress up on this occasion and come out to greet one another while dining on delicious dishes particularly prepared for this day. Prayers are recited, and homes are cleaned to bring in newness and prosperity.
On this day, families express their creativity by drawing rangolis in their homes, including flower petals and coloured rice. As per mythology, it is believed that on this day, Lord Brahma created the universe, with Ugadi considered the first day of the universe’s creation.

Gudi Padwa 2025: Know more about the festival
The Gudi Padwa festival will be celebrated on the same day and is primarily observed by the people of Maharashtra according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar.

On this day, many individuals take a traditional oil bath before dressing up in new clothes and decorating their homes with rangoli made with flowers and colours, and people then hoist the gudi, or treasured flag.
It is believed that Lord Brahma created the universe on this day after a natural disaster. And it is because of his efforts that time had restarted and a new era of truth and justice had emerged.
