Sunscreen, as we know, is the most crucial part of skincare. It not only prevents tanning but also protects you from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet radiations, which can cause a range of short-term and long-term damage. Roshni Chopra, too, absolutely swears by sunscreen application and recently doled out some essential sunscreen rules that you must keep in mind.
*Apply 2-3 fingers of sunscreen 20 minutes before going into the sun.
*Don’t forget to apply to your neck and decolletage as well.
*Your body needs sunscreen, too.
*Remember to reapply every three hours. Roshni prefers a sun stick or a spray for reapplication.
*Don’t forget to use an SPF lip balm.
Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics also mentioned that regular application of sunscreen gives protection from UV radiation, reduces the risk of skin cancer, prevents sunburn, minimises premature ageing, and maintains even skin tone.
*Use a sufficient amount of sunscreen to cover all exposed skin. For most adults, this means about one ounce (a shot glass full) for each application.
*Choose a sunscreen labelled as broad-spectrum, which provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
*Select a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. SPF 30 blocks about 97 per cent of UVB rays, while higher SPFs offer slightly more protection.
*Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Even water-resistant sunscreen can wear off.
*Allow the sunscreen to absorb into your skin for about 15 minutes before going out in the sun.
*Don’t forget often-overlooked areas like your ears, neck, lips, and the top of your feet. Apply sunscreen to these areas as well.
*Protect your lips by using a lip balm or lipstick with SPF.
*Whenever possible, stay in the shade during peak sunlight hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
*Combine sunscreen with protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection.
*Sunscreen can lose its effectiveness over time. Check the expiration date and replace old bottles.
*Sunscreen isn’t just for summer. Use it year-round, as UV radiation can still harm your skin during cloudy or winter days.
*Water, sand, and snow can reflect UV rays, intensifying exposure. Be extra cautious in these environments.
